This dark liquid smells all at once sensual and smoky, familiar and mysterious. Vetiver essential oil is a natural aphrodisiac, which may be why it is used in many types of cologne. Naturally cooling and heavy, the use of Vetiver promotes mental tranquility and balances the body. It is commonly used by massage therapists to relax their clients, as well as provide relief to joint or muscular pain. Vetiver essential oil is also a potent antiseptic, and can effectively curtail the growth of Staphylococcus aureus.
The vetiver plant is popular on the Indian Subcontinent, where it is known as “Khus-Khus” and is used to thatch houses and create bug-repellant curtains and window shades. The grass provides a cool scent to moist air, which also repels insects. Its roots grow strong and deep, and it is grown along riverbeds to prevent soil erosion.
While the plant is more commonly used as a whole, it is the potent root which is steam distilled to create Vetiver essential oil. A rich colored amber liquid is the beautiful payoff.
