Known commonly as African Sandalwood, Muhuhu essential oil has a mysterious yet familiar earthy, musky scent, which mixes well with herbaceous and floral scents as well as some fruits. Like a fine wine, the scent of Muhuhu essential oil improves with age. Should you find a bottle from the turn of the century lying around, uncork it and breathe in the deep relaxation…aaah, it was a good year. In Africa, The Muhuhu tree is traditionally used to create beautiful flooring, and this creates scraps and off cuts perfect for essential oil use.
The wood of the Brachyleana hutchinsii is steam distilled to create this oil. Some use it as a replacement for Indian sandalwood because of its earthy base notes and musky scent. The process of creating the oil creates a thick yellow substance, which makes its way into many a fragrance.

Recipes With Muhuhu Essential Oil
- 25 drops of Muhuhu oil
- Distilled water
- Add to a 50ml mist bottle, spray over the room as
- 2 drops of Muhuhu oil
- 1 drop of Wild Orange oil
- 2 drops of Spearmint oil
- Add to a diffuser and diffuse 30-60 minutes.
- 6 drops of Muhuhu oil
- Add to a bowl of water. Wet a cloth, squeeze out some of the water and apply to the throat area for 15 min and repeat.
- 15 drops of Muhuhu oil
- 5 drops of Lemon oil
- 10 drops of Chamomile oil
- Add to personal diffuser and inhale as needed for relief.
