Allspice gets its common name from the idea that it is a of blend of many different types of herbs and spaces. Imagine you had cinnamon rolled in pepper, then dipped in cardamom, and topped with clove and a hint of ginger for good measure! The scientific name, Pimenta dioica, comes from Christopher Colombus himself, who proudly brought allspice back from the Caribbean (thinking it was India), and boasted it around town as “Pimenta,” thinking it was pepper.
The alluring aroma of allspice essential oil has found its way into many men’s fragrances because of its spicy, woody body. Something about woodsy, spicy aromas just makes this a perfect scent for a man to wear. In addition to making quite an amazing cologne, allspice essential oil also has many medicinal benefits as well. It is highly associated with the digestive system, is a gentle stimulant, and is rich in antioxidants.
The allspice tree grows natively in the Caribbean, where it can reach 60 feet in height. It is considered an evergreen shrub, and can look very similar to bay laurel. Allspice oil is produced by steam distilling the Pimenta dioica plant’s crushed berries. The thin, clear to pale yellow oil that is produced is like bottled, fresh allspice!
